Starting Year 7
Starting high school is an exciting milestone for students and families. Moving from Year 6 to Year 7 can feel like a big change. We help every child feel confident and supported during the transition to high school.
What to expect in high school
High school brings new experiences and routines, including:
- a larger school with more subjects, teachers and classrooms
- a timetable with different lessons each day
- moving between classrooms and carrying books and equipment
- more independence and responsibility for homework and study
- new friendships and opportunities to join activities and clubs.
Before your child starts Year 7
Enrolment interview
Before your child begins, all families are invited to meet with our Principal or other members of the Year 7 support team. This is a time to share:
- medical conditions or allergies
- family circumstances that may affect your child’s start
- any learning or wellbeing needs.
We will also explain the supports our school provides, such as:
- support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through personalised learning pathways
- extra support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- support for students with disability or other learning needs through inclusive education programs.

Our transition to high school program
We work closely with local primary schools to help students feel ready. Our transition to high school program helps Year 6 students get ready for Year 7. Activities may include:
- orientation days and school tours
- parent information sessions and meet the teacher events
- subject tasters and classroom visits
- peer support activities with older students.
Students, parents and carers can join these sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. If you need an interpreter, let us know.

Visits to Year 6 students
Each year during Term 2, Year Advisers and high school student representatives visit Year 5 and Year 6 students in their primary school to share information about Eden Marine High School (EMHS) with the aim of supporting students to feel informed and confident about the upcoming changes in their educational journey. The Year 7 Adviser provides an overview of high school and spends time getting to know the students. EMHS student representatives also share their experiences and answer questions.
After the visit, a dedicated Google Classroom, moderated by their Year 7 Adviser, is established for Year 6 students. It provides a safe and supportive forum where students can continue to ask questions about starting high school and receive helpful and accurate responses.
Eden Marine High School open night
Each year EMHS holds an open night. This is an important event designed for Year 5 and Year 6 students and their parents and carers. During this evening, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with Year Adviser who provide guidance and support to students throughout their high school journey. Visitors will also be able to tour the school facilities to become familiar with the learning environment. Additionally, the event offers a chance for parents, carers, and students to ask questions and gather valuable information about what to expect when transitioning to high school. This includes the opportunity to view displays and talk with teachers about the diverse range of subjects on offer. This helps to ease any concerns and ensures everyone feels well-prepared for the move ahead.

Targeted transition support
Small schools students:
To support students coming from small schools, additional transition days may be provided to help them become familiar with the larger high school environment. This may include tailored orientation sessions, buddy systems, and extra opportunities to connect with peers and staff, ensuring a smooth and confident start to high school.
Students with additional learning needs:
Students with additional learning needs receive specialised transition support, including personalised planning meetings, collaboration between primary and high school support staff, and access to tailored resources and programs. This ensures that each student’s unique requirements are addressed, promoting a successful and positive transition to high school.
English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
EMHS works alongside public primary schools to support students who need extra help to learn English as an additional language or dialect. This also covers Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students whose first language is an Indigenous language.
EMHS will provide further information for these programs to families throughout the year prior to them starting high school.
